Mahendra Singh Dhoni

Former Indian cricketer and captain of the Indian national cricket team, Mahendra Singh Dhoni was born on July 7, 1981, in Ranchi, India. He was popularly known as MS Dhoni. He originally played as a goalkeeper in a football team and switched to cricket after his coach, Keshav Ranjan Banerjee spotted his potential in the sport. His love for cricket begin at a very young age, and he soon started playing for local clubs. It was in the 1999-2000 season that Dhoni made his first Ranji Trophy appearance for Bihar, establishing himself as one of the most promising young players of the game.

In the year 2004, Dhoni scored a rapid century against Pakistan in Nairobi, Kenya, which brought him to spotlight. The aggressive batting style and wicket-keeping skills of Dhoni caught the eye of the selectors because of which he was soon drafted into the Indian team for the Bangladesh tour in the year 2004.

He was selected as the Indian team’s wicket-keeper for the ODI series against Sri Lanka. In just his fifth match, he scored his maiden ODI century which made an immediate impact on his career and soon earned him a permanent place in the Indian cricket team. Dhoni’s insightful captaincy and calm attitude under pressure earned him a lot of appreciation, and he was soon appointed as the captain of the Indian ODI and Test teams as well.

Dhoni’s leadership skills, tactical acumen, and ability to remain calm under pressure, were widely admired by his teammates and opponents alike. In 2007, he was appointed as the captain of the Indian T20 team for the inaugural World T20 tournament in South Africa. Under his leadership, India went on to achieve several historic milestones, some of which were the 2011 ICC cricket World Cup in and the 2007 ICC world T20.

In the year 2008, Mahendra Singh Dhoni became associated with the Indian premier league IPL when he was bought by the Chennai Super Kings CSK franchise. Under his captaincy, CSK became one of the most successful franchise in IPL history. In the year 2014, Dhoni retired from test cricket and from all forms of international cricket in year 2020. He remains one of the most successful Indian cricket team captain, and is widely regarded as one of the greatest cricketers of all time. He has been awarded with Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna, the highest sporting honor. He has also been honored with two of India’s highest civilian honors, the Padma Shri and the Padma Bhushan.
